3rd Annual Farmer-Baker Forum: Linking Wheat Farmers to
Artisan Bakers
June 24 - 27, 2004
Come and participate in this forum and
bring wheat producers together with the baking industry in an effort for both to
learn about the needs, abilities and constraints of the other. The focus is to
form a link between the ‘producer and user’ necessary for understanding the
value-added possibilities. Bakers will experience the mechanics and art of wheat
production. Wheat producers will be introduced to the bakers who will use the
farmers’ production to make their final product (and in the case of artisan
bakers—their artwork). Come connect!
This premier event will begin at the Fairfield Inn
(Airport) in K ansas City, MO. and travel by motor coach to Kansas State
University, Manhattan, KS to tour the Grain Science Department and other
facilities or interest. We will meet with wheat breeding scientists and
tour their wheat fields. Participants will also tour a state-of-the art stone grinding mill, Homestead Milling, New Cambria, KS. There you can watch and ask questions about how wheat is milled into
flour. Next on the tour, wheat farms in central Kansas. Weather permitting,
participants will be able to “get the feel of a combine” and watch harvest in
progress. To come full circle in the value-added process, the last stop on the tour
will be at Farm to Market Bread Company, Kansas City, MO. Participants will be able to ask questions and learn about
the bakery and the value-added business concept. Finally, the tour will end back
at Kansas City International Airport.
